Community Development and Resource Management Over years PPI has collaborated with development and resource organisations in building local level capacity for sustainable development. The focus has been on three main aspects of community development: Institution Strengthening, Capacity Building, and in design and institutionalisation of sustainable and replicable community development mechanisms and products. Some of the organisations we have collaborated with include the Association of Local Government Authorities of Kenya (ALGAK), National Cooperative Housing Union (NACHU), Western Women Network (WWN), Stromme Memorial Foundation (SMF), National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), ACK-Eldoret Region Company (ACK-ERC), Bungoma Family Development Programme (BFDP), PLAN International and Semi-Arid Lands Training and Livestock Centres of Kenya (SALTLICK). In each case PPI developed installed and operationalised systems, procedures, formats and models, and programmes for gradual evolution, growth and development of local level community institutions to serve as development catalyst and to speed up delivery of services and institutionalisation of development interventions by national and international development agencies. In most respects the local level community institutions have come together forming local Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) or companies limited by guarantees. The community institutions evolved in this format have demonstrated high level of local participation in resource mobilisation and application, local governance, ownership and responsibility. They have also been very effective in allowing gradual phase out by the international/national development agency at the same time freeing resources for development elsewhere as the local people adequately and effectively assume responsibility for their own development. |
